Naomi Takeuchi Joins the Sister Study Recruitment Team
Durham, NC (March 21, 2006) -
Naomi Takeuchi joins the Sister Study recruitment team to assist with efforts to increase the number of Asian American and Pacific Island women participating in a national study conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). NIEHS is one of the National Institutes of Health of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Sister Study will enroll 50,000 women to learn how environment and genes affect a woman's chances of getting breast cancer. This is a landmark long-term study of women aged 35 to 74 that will focus on women who have a sister who has had breast cancer, but who do not have breast cancer themselves. Currently, there are almost 25,000 participants registered for the study yet most are Caucasian, 35 to 64, with college degrees. Recruitment efforts are now focused on providing a more diverse group of women in order to truly represent the U.S. female population. For further information about the Sister Study, visit the website at www.sisterstudy.org or call 1-877-4SISTER (1-877-474-7837).
"I am flatterred and honored that the Sister Study has asked 1000 Cranes Business Consulting to be involved with this breast cancer study," said Takeuchi. "Asian American and Pacific Island women are far under-represented in many health studies and this consulting engagement will give me an opportunity to ensure these groups are represented. I am very passionate and committed about helping nonprofits, and this will utilize my background in genetics and my speaking skills as a member of the National Speaker Association. I am looking forward to helping the Sister Study achieve its goals."
The mission of the National Institute of Environment Health Sciences (NIEHS) is to reduce the burden of human illness and disability from environmental causes. The NIEHS achieves its mission through multidisciplinary biomedical research programs, prevention and intervention efforts, and communication strategies such as training, education, technology transfer and community outreach.
